A Brief Biography

-----------------

Steve first became turned on to drumming when watching a performance in the Hawaii pavilion at the New York World?s Fair in 1964. Hawaii. Very interesting . . .

He went to his first drum class in 1993 in York, England, and took it over in 1996, running it continuously till 2001. During this time he attended classes with a number of teachers, English and African, including Keith Jackman, Musa Suma, Lu Pradere, Saidi Kanda, Henri Gao-bi, Lamin Jassey and Magatte Dieng.

From other workshops and classes in singing and dance, run by Barbara Swetina, Em Whitfield and Sian Cruise, and as a member of York and Leeds Peoples Choirs, he has gained knowledge of music, rhythm and harmony beyond drumming.
In 2000, the local drum and world music shop Knock on Wood invited Arthur Hull to do a two-hour Playshop in Leeds, and Steve was hooked! He has been to five Hawaii Playshops since, from 2001 to 2006: two as mentor, one as meta-mentor; and to every UK Playshop since 2002 latterly as part of the Core team.

His motto is 'The Answer's 'Yes!' - what was the question again?' and this has taken him (not without some trepidation) into all sorts of places, including a psychiatric hospital, a young offenders' institution and a hotel conference room with 130 fabric conditioners from an international company. He has also done drum circles with:

A year or eight ago he was honoured to be asked to become the first non-American member of the Drumcircles Yahoo Group 'Mod Squad', a job he took to like a duck to water, quickly earning the epithet 'The blithe curmudgeon' from group member Rea Fox.

In June 2005 he retired from his full-time day-job as a book-publishers rep to develop his DCF business.

Mission Statement
I want to share the exhilaration I felt when I went to Arthur Hull's first Uk Community Drum Circle in Leeds in 2000, when he chucked 80-odd people up in the air and kept them there for two hours!
Target Populations
I'm up for almost anything, but I particularly enjoy doing drum circles as part of Community / Festivals, Fund-Raisers, Fun Days and Galas. Oh, and Scouts; Guides; Brownies and Cubs.
